The “One-Another” Passages in the NT
Dan Williams, our pastor in Chadron, often spoke about the “one another” passages in the NT. Here is a list of some of these commands.
- Love one another (John 13:22, 24, 35; 15:12, 17; Rom 12:10; Eph 4:2; 1 Thess 3:12; 4:9, 1 Pet 1:22, 4:8; 1 John 3:11, 3:23, 4:7, 11, 12; 2 John 5)
- Treat one another as you want to be treated (Matt 7:12)
- Wash feet for one another (John 13:14). The implication is to serve one another.
- Show honor to one another (Rom 12:10)
- Live in harmony with one another (Rom 12:16; 15:5)
- Don’t pass judgment on one another in regard to disputed things (Rom 14:13)
- Welcome one another (Rom 15:7)
- Instruct one another (Rom 15:14)
- Greet one another (Rom 15:16; 1 Cor 16:20; 2 Cor. 13:12; 1 Pet 5:14)
- Share communion together (1 Cor 11:33). One implication of this might be to share meals with one another.
- Care for one another (1 Cor 12:25)
- Comfort one another (2 Cor 13:11)
- Agree with one another (2 Cor 13:11)
- Serve one another (Gal 5:13)
- Don’t bite and devour one another (Gal 5:15)
- Don’t be conceited, provoking and envying one another (Gal 5:26)
- Bear the burdens of one another (Gal 6:2; Eph 4:2)
- Be kind, forgiving one another (Eph 4:32)
- Sing and share Scripture with one another (Eph 5:19; Col 3:16)
- Submit to one another (Eph 5:21). The context is the household codes.
- Don’t lie to one another (Col 3:9)
- Teach and admonish one another (Col 3:16)
- Encourage each other with the hope of the resurrection (1 Thess 4:18; 5:11). The context is the death of loved ones.
- Build one another up (1 Thess 5:11)
- Seek to do good for one another (1 Thess 5:15)
- Exhort one another to persevere in the faith (Heb 3:13; 10:25)
- Stir each other up to love and good works (Heb 10:24)
- Meet with each other (Heb 10:25)
- Don’t speak evil against each other (James 4:11)
- Don’t grumble about one another (James 5:9)
- Confess your sins to one another (James 5:16)
- Pray for each other (James 5:16). The context suggests prayers for healing.
- Open up your homes to one another (1 Pet 4:9)
- Show humility to one another (1 Pet 5:5)
